In Eugene, Kipyegon stayed close to the pacemaker through 400m (1:01.61) and 800m (2:03.17), before unleashing her trademark kick down the back straight to storm across the finish nearly three seconds ahead of the field.
The achievement came just a week after her remarkable 4:06.42 mile in Paris, the quickest women’s mile ever recorded, though ineligible as an official record since it was run in an exhibition race.
Reflecting on her form, Kipyegon said, “The changes were that I was preparing myself for something special, which was to run under four minutes in a mile, and I think I pushed myself, getting better and better toward the 1500m. So, I knew it was possible to still run under 3:49. This is the road to Tokyo, and I would say I am in the right direction," as seen in a press release.
Kipyegon’s attention now shifts to the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, set for today, September 13 to September 21, where she will chase more glory.
